Moderate Magnitude 4.5 Quake Hits 57 km Southeast of Bugalaga, Indonesia Early Morning

A magnitude 4.5 earthquake near Bugalaga, Intan Jaya Regency, Central Papua, Indonesia, was reported only 11 minutes ago by Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Indonesia. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate to considerable depth of 152. km beneath the epicenter early morning on Sunday, May 17th, 2026, at 5:03 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5 as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Bugalaga (pop. 3,600) located 57 km from the epicenter, Mulia (pop. 35,900) 101 km away, and Timika (pop. 142,900) 101 km away.
