Indonesia records strongest tourism recovery since Covid

Indonesia recorded its strongest first-half tourism performance since the Covid-19 pandemic, welcoming 7.45 million international visitors between January and June 2026.

The total represents a 5.7% increase compared with the same period last year, reinforcing the country’s continued tourism recovery and keeping it on track toward its annual target of 16-17 million overseas arrivals.

June alone saw 1.39 million international visitors, up 2.2% year over year, according to official figures reported by local media.

Visitor spending also climbed despite travelers taking shorter vacations. Data from Indonesia’s Central Statistics Agency (BPS) showed average spending reached $1,285 per trip during the second quarter, an increase of 7.2% compared with a year earlier.

The stronger visitor spending is expected to provide an additional boost to Indonesia’s tourism economy, with destinations such as Bali continuing to attract high levels of international demand.

Indonesia recorded the second best performance in tourism within Southeast Asia, just behind Vietnam. Across Southeast Asia, tourism growth remained mixed during the first half of 2026.

Malaysia retained its position as the region’s leading destination, welcoming 21.12 million international visitors from January through June, up 2.5% year over year.

Thailand recorded 16.7 million foreign arrivals during the same period, representing a 3.1% decline compared with the first half of 2025.

Vietnam welcomed 12.3 million international visitors in the first six months of the year, a 14.9% increase year over year, driven by strong demand from key Asian markets and expanded international air connectivity.

Singapore welcomed 8.12 million overseas visitors during the period, down 1.7% from a year earlier. The city-state attributed the decline largely to weaker demand from major source markets, including Indonesia and India.

Despite varying performances across the region, Southeast Asia continues to benefit from sustained international travel demand, with Indonesia’s latest figures highlighting the country’s steady recovery and growing visitor spending as it works toward another record tourism year.
