Jemimah Rodrigues, Nandani Sharma star as India crush England by 38 runs in 1st T20I

India Women’s cricket team kicked off their T20I series against England in emphatic fashion, registering a commanding 38-run victory in the opening match at Chelmsford on May 28, 2026. Riding on brilliant half-centuries from Jemimah Rodrigues and Yastika Bhatia, India posted an imposing total of 188/7 before restricting England to 150/8 to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Jemimah Rodrigues was named Player of the Match after a scintillating knock of 69 runs off just 40 deliveries, while Yastika Bhatia marked her return with a composed 54 off 40 balls. Their partnership proved to be the defining moment of the contest after India suffered an early collapse.

England’s decision to bowl first appeared justified when Lauren Bell struck twice in the opening over, dismissing Smriti Mandhana for a duck and Shafali Verma for just two runs. At 7/2, India found themselves under immense pressure. However, Rodrigues and Bhatia responded in stunning fashion, launching a counterattack that completely shifted the momentum.

The duo added a remarkable 126 runs for the third wicket, punishing England’s bowlers with aggressive stroke play. A particularly costly over from Issy Wong, which yielded 27 runs, accelerated India’s scoring rate significantly. The visitors finished the powerplay with their highest-ever T20I powerplay score and continued to dominate through the middle overs.

After both set batters departed, Deepti Sharma provided the finishing touches with a quickfire 22 off 13 balls, helping India reach a formidable total of 188/7. Lauren Bell was England’s standout bowler, finishing with figures of 3/34.

Chasing 189, England needed a strong start but were immediately put on the back foot. Young pacer Kranti Gaud struck early, removing Sophia Dunkley and Alice Capsey to leave the hosts struggling. Amy Jones then mounted a fightback with an impressive 67 off 48 deliveries and shared a 64-run partnership with captain Heather Knight, who contributed 21 runs.

Despite Jones’ resistance, England struggled to maintain the required run rate. The turning point came in the 16th over when debutant Nandani Sharma produced a dream spell. She dismissed the dangerous Jones and Dani Gibson on consecutive deliveries, effectively ending England’s hopes of a comeback.

Nandani finished with outstanding figures of 3/34 on debut, while Kranti Gaud chipped in with 2/24 to ensure England never got close to the target. The hosts eventually ended on 150/8, falling 38 runs short.

The victory gives India a valuable 1-0 advantage in the three-match series and showcases the depth and balance within the squad. With experienced performers like Rodrigues stepping up and newcomers such as Nandani Sharma making an immediate impact, India will head into the second T20I full of confidence as they look to seal the series.
