Hong Kong Financial Sector Awaits Potential Cross-Border Policy Expansion on 29th Handover Anniversary – News and Statistics

As Hong Kong approaches the 29th anniversary of its handover on July 1, the city’s financial sector is closely monitoring potential policy announcements from Beijing that could strengthen its intermediary role between mainland China and global markets. According to a report published on June 29, 2026, by the South China Morning Post, previous July 1 anniversaries have historically introduced financial policy changes, and this year markets are anticipating expanded cross-border access.

The report notes that in 2012 and 2022, the central government unveiled 14 finance-related measures covering cross-border business, offshore yuan, overseas initial public offerings, and the expansion of a cross-border trading scheme to include exchange-traded funds. This year, attention is focused on the long-discussed possibility of including real estate investment trusts (Reits) in the connect programme, the cross-border channel that links investors in mainland China and Hong Kong.

Edward Au Chung-hing, southern region managing partner at Deloitte China, commented that adding Reits to the programme would represent another meaningful step in the continued expansion of Hong Kong-mainland market connectivity. Based on previous signals from regulators, Au projected that the inclusion could occur in the coming quarters, potentially extending into early 2027.
