The process of bringing back former inspector general of police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed to Bangladesh has begun, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) said today.

Speaking at a press briefing, ACC Deputy Director (Public Relations) Akhtarul Islam said the repatriation process is underway and a formal request letter will soon be sent to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) government.

He said preparations are being made to compile all necessary documents required for Benazir’s return following his arrest in Dubai.

Once the documents related to the corruption cases against him are finalised, they will be sent through diplomatic channels via the Ministry of Home Affairs, Akhtarul added.

Benazir, once among the most powerful law enforcement figures under the ousted Awami League government, has been arrested in Dubai following an Interpol Red Notice sought by Bangladesh.

Dubai Police arrested Benazir on June 12, and the Directorate General of Federal Criminal Police, National Central Bureau (NCB) Abu Dhabi, informed the Bangladesh government of the arrest via email.
