Dubai Tower Sets Sail: New Arctic Route Could Cut Asia-Europe Shipping Time – News and Statistics

A 35,000-ton container vessel is scheduled to depart from the Chinese port of Ningbo on Friday, beginning a journey to the UK that could mark a significant shift in global trade routes. The ship, named Dubai Tower, will travel approximately 7,500 miles through the northern Pacific and into the Arctic Ocean via the Bering Strait, with a crew of 20. The vessel will navigate between polar ice floes, supported by a squadron of nuclear-powered Russian icebreakers on standby in case the sea freezes. If successful, the ship and its 1,700 containers will reach Felixstowe, Britain’s largest container port, in about three weeks.

The voyage is not entirely new, as a sister ship completed a similar journey a year ago as part of a fact-finding mission to assess the route’s feasibility. However, this week’s sailing is intended to launch the first-ever scheduled container service using the North-East Passage, a route long considered a potential shortcut as the climate warms. China first proposed polar sailings nearly a decade ago, declaring itself a near-Arctic state. The initiative is part of Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative, which aims to revive and modernize historical Silk Road trade routes connecting Asia with Europe and Africa.

Chinese shipping line Sea Legend plans to operate the service weekly over the two months when polar waters are expected to remain sufficiently ice-free this year. If the experiment succeeds, it would establish the Northern Sea Route as the quickest maritime link between East Asia and north-west Europe. The sailing from Ningbo to Felixstowe is expected to take 20 days, compared with 32 to 40 days for the established route via the Suez Canal.

The move has drawn particular interest due to ongoing threats from Houthi rebels to vessels heading to the Suez Canal. Major container lines have largely avoided the canal since late 2023, when the Houthis began attacking ships in the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait in response to Israel’s invasion of Gaza. As a result, more than 95% of container volumes between Asia and Europe have been diverted around southern Africa, extending journey times to as many as 50 days.
