Egypt explores specialised fund to boost biotechnology, health technology investment

Egypt is exploring the establishment of a specialised investment fund for biotechnology and medical technologies as part of broader efforts to attract investment, support local innovation, and improve healthcare services, the Ministry of Health and Population said.

Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar met representatives of Gold Rock Venture at the ministry’s headquarters in New Alamein to discuss the proposed fund and potential areas of cooperation.

Health Ministry spokesperson Hossam Abdel Ghaffar said the proposed fund would focus on investments and partnerships in medical devices, diagnostics, biotechnology, digital health solutions, and artificial intelligence, with an emphasis on technologies that can be practically deployed and scaled.

The discussions also addressed ways to bridge the gap between scientific research and commercial applications by creating an integrated pathway encompassing research and intellectual property, product development and testing, manufacturing, and market entry.

The ministry said universities and university hospitals could play an important role in testing, validating, and developing new healthcare technologies and innovations.

The proposed partnership would also seek to attract international healthcare companies and advanced technologies to Egypt, facilitate technology transfer and local manufacturing, and support Egyptian companies and innovators in expanding into regional and international markets.

According to the ministry, the initiative could further strengthen Egypt’s position as a gateway to African and regional markets by leveraging international expertise and business networks to connect global companies with local opportunities and strategic partners.

The meeting also reviewed investment opportunities in diagnostics and medical devices, as well as the use of artificial intelligence and digital technologies to improve healthcare delivery.

The ministry noted that such technologies could play a particularly important role in areas where access to specialised medical services remains limited, helping expand healthcare coverage, reduce pressure on medical facilities, and improve the efficiency of healthcare delivery.

Abdel Ghaffar stressed that investments should be directed towards addressing the specific needs and challenges facing Egypt’s healthcare system, with priority given to innovations and technologies that offer practical and scalable solutions.

The proposed partnership aims to establish an integrated ecosystem linking scientific research, investment, and healthcare priorities while supporting technologies capable of delivering tangible improvements in the quality and accessibility of healthcare services, the ministry added.
