Shandong Port yard breaks into chemical tankers

Sealand Equipment Group

Shandong Port-owned Sealand Equipment Group has landed its first oil and chemical tanker order, signing a 10,000 dwt newbuild with an unnamed European customer.

The RINA-class vessel will be able to carry IMO II and III chemical cargoes and will combine a shaft-generator DC bus with battery storage for more flexible power management.

The contract moves the Chinese group into a higher-spec segment after building an orderbook dominated by multipurpose, heavylift and workboat tonnage.

Sealand has been expanding its shipbuilding operation through a two-base partnership with Tongling Port and Shipping.

The arrangement combines commercial, design and negotiation work in Shandong with construction capacity in Anhui. The companies said the chemical tanker was their latest joint project after a series of new-energy bulkers.

Shipbuilding data cited by the Chinese reports showed Sealand with 30 ships totalling around 260,000 dwt on order before the latest contract, with deliveries running through 2029.
