Indonesia backs information integrity, journalist protection

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia reaffirmed its commitment to protecting information integrity and journalist safety amid rapid artificial intelligence growth during a UNESCO forum in Paris, while calling for stronger global cooperation on digital governance.

The commitment was highlighted at the 70th Meeting of the Bureau of UNESCO’s International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC), held on June 18-19.

According to a statement released in Jakarta on Sunday, Director General of Public Communication and Media Fifi Aleyda Yahya said technological advances have fundamentally changed how people produce, consume and trust information.

She said international cooperation is needed to ensure digital transformation advances alongside the protection of reliable public information.

Indonesia attended the meeting as vice chair of IPDC Group IV and joined discussions on challenges facing global media from digital technologies and artificial intelligence.

Participants agreed on measures to strengthen media sustainability, information integrity, environmental journalism and the responsible use of artificial intelligence.

The forum also approved funding for 48 international projects for 2026-2027 and placed artificial intelligence’s impact on journalism on the agenda for the next IPDC Council Session.

Indonesia’s Deputy Permanent Delegate to UNESCO Satrya Wibawa said the vice chair position gives Indonesia an opportunity to advance the interests of developing countries.

He said priorities include strengthening journalist training and expanding the use of artificial intelligence to support media infrastructure.

Wibawa added that Indonesia could promote closer coordination among member states, improve media literacy and keep journalist safety central to future IPDC discussions.

He said debates on artificial intelligence and journalism are especially relevant as Indonesia accelerates its digital transformation agenda.

Indonesia views the discussions as critical because the future of media depends not only on technological adaptation but also on preserving public trust and countering disinformation.

Through its role in UNESCO’s IPDC, Indonesia aims to help shape global policies that make digital transformation inclusive, accountable and aligned with the public interest.
