Japan’s Agriculture Minister Visits OCP’s Jorf Lasfar Platform

Casablanca — Japanese Agriculture Minister Norikazu Suzuki visited OCP Group’s industrial platform in Jorf Lasfar on Saturday as Morocco and Japan continue to deepen cooperation in agriculture, food security, and fertilizer supply.

Suzuki, Japan’s Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, was accompanied by an official delegation during the visit, which OCP described as part of a longstanding partnership that has linked the Moroccan phosphate giant with Japanese partners for more than six decades.

The partnership dates back to 1961 and has evolved into a strategic cooperation centered on agricultural development and fertilizer supply. OCP said the partnership contributes to food security efforts in Japan and across the ASEAN region, while supporting Japan’s agricultural ambitions at a time when supply chain resilience has become an increasingly important issue.

The visit comes just after Morocco and Japan marked the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations. On May 8, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi held talks by videoconference and signed a joint communiqué aimed at expanding cooperation across several sectors, including renewable energy, industry, food security, and phosphate-based fertilizers.

Against that backdrop, Suzuki’s visit to Jorf Lasfar signals the continued importance of OCP in the relationship between Rabat and Tokyo. OCP said both sides share the objective of promoting more sustainable agriculture through innovation, responsible nutrient management, and long-term cooperation.

The company added that it intends to further strengthen ties with Japanese partners, building on more than 60 years of collaboration serving farmers, local communities, and food systems in Japan and the wider ASEAN region. As demand grows for secure fertilizer supplies and resilient agricultural value chains, Morocco’s phosphate industry remains a key pillar of that partnership.
