ABB will upgrade the Buzzard platform’s control and safety systems to strengthen offshore operational reliability.
ABB has been selected by CNOOC Petroleum Europe Limited to carry out a technological upgrade of the automation and control systems on the Buzzard offshore platform, one of the facilities associated with one of the largest oil fields in the British North Sea. The project aims to strengthen operational safety and maintain the reliability of energy production at a strategic infrastructure for the United Kingdom.
Upgrading critical systems without stopping production
The Buzzard platform is located approximately 100 kilometers northeast of Aberdeen and is a significant asset in the country’s offshore production. As part of the contract, ABB will perform a selective modernization of the ABB Ability™ System 800xA® distributed control system and the Safeguard 400 safety system.
The project will be implemented in phases to allow operations to continue while technological upgrades are being rolled out. This strategy reduces planned disruptions and helps mitigate the risks associated with upgrading critical infrastructure.
Local engineering to reduce operational risks
The project will be managed from Aberdeen by ABB’s engineering team, which already provides support to the platform through an on-ground reference system for testing and technical validations.
Thanks to this infrastructure, modifications can be verified before their installation offshore. This approach allows for the early identification of potential issues, reduces operational risks, and preserves production continuity during the deployment of upgrades.
Automation and safety for more reliable operation
The initiative includes improvements to the systems responsible for monitoring industrial processes and essential safety functions within the platform. This technological upgrade will maintain the performance of existing systems and extend their capacity to meet current operational demands.
According to Nicolas Alonso, director of ABB’s Energy Industries division for the UK, Ireland and Azerbaijan, the project reflects the ongoing collaboration between the two companies to ensure safe and reliable operations.
A project aligned with the UK’s energy security
The modernization of the Buzzard platform comes at a time when energy security remains a top priority for the UK. Upgrading the automation systems will help maintain the operational availability of this crucial North Sea facility and support long-term hydrocarbon production.
Likewise, the project reinforces ABB’s presence in the offshore sector through automation, digitalization and industrial safety solutions aimed at improving the efficiency and sustainability of energy operations.
