Whyalla steelworks bidder Jindal Steel calls for carbon tariffs to support green manufacturing bid

The Indian manufacturing conglomerate that is one of two shortlisted to acquire the faltering Whyalla steelworks said the federal government should impose a tariff on imported high-carbon steel to support billions of dollars of investment in low-emission manufacturing.

Jindal Steel International director Harssha Shetty said the company was prepared to invest “significant” sums in South Australia if its bid for the Whyalla mill was successful under a plan to effectively replicate the $US2 billion ($2.8 billion) low-carbon iron and steel plant it built in Oman.
