Kazakhstan advances first sustainable aviation fuel project with new agreements

Baku: Kazakhstan has moved to the next phase of developing its first sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production project after KazMunayGas-Aero, KazFoodProducts and US-based engineering company KBR signed two trilateral agreements to support the project’s implementation, Trend Az reported.

According to KazMunayGas (KMG), the agreements cover the development of a Process Design Package (PDP) for the planned SAF production facility and a licensing agreement for the use of KBR’s PURESAF℠ technology, which incorporates the Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) process to produce aviation fuel from alcohol-based feedstock.

KMG said the agreements establish the organisational, legal and technological framework required for the project to move into its next stage of development.

The company said the project aligns with the Kazakh President’s vision of developing Kazakhstan into an international aviation hub with strong transit potential. It added that the facility is expected to integrate domestically produced agricultural feedstock into the production of low-carbon aviation fuel, creating higher-value opportunities for the country’s agricultural sector.

According to KMG, the initiative is intended to support the decarbonisation of the aviation industry while contributing to Kazakhstan’s commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

KBR, headquartered in Houston, operates engineering and technology businesses in more than 80 countries. KazFoodProducts is one of Kazakhstan’s leading agro-industrial companies and operates the BioOperations plant, which specialises in deep grain processing and bioethanol production.

The planned sustainable aviation fuel plant will be located in the Kostanay region of Kazakhstan.
