May 22, 2026
German steelmakers boosted their steel output by 9.5% in April 2026 compared to the same month last year, according to data from the German Steel Association (WV Stahl). However, production declined by 3.3% from the previous month, totaling 3.23 million tons.
Oxygen converters produced 2.22 million tons of steel in April, a year-on-year increase of 10.7% and a 0.5% rise compared to March. In contrast, electric arc furnaces generated 1.01 million tons, up 7.1% year-on-year but down 10.8% month-on-month.
Pig iron output reached 2.06 million tons in April, rising 10.9% year-on-year and 2% from March. Hot-rolled steel production stood at 2.75 million tons, marking a 10.5% annual increase but a 4.6% decline month-on-month.
For the first four months of 2026, Germany produced 12.49 million tons of steel, a 9.1% gain over the same period in 2025. Oxygen converters contributed 8.61 million tons (+11% year-on-year), while electric arc furnaces accounted for 3.88 million tons (+5.2% year-on-year).
Over the January–April period, pig iron output climbed 10.5% year-on-year to 7.93 million tons, and hot-rolled steel production totaled 10.76 million tons, up 6.3% from the prior year.
The data indicate that the recovery in German steel production continues, supported by growth in both the open-hearth and electric arc furnace segments. Nevertheless, the improvement does not yet signal a full recovery from the crisis, as output remains below the level needed for adequate capacity utilization. This suggests that steel demand in Germany and the European Union is gradually stabilizing but remains insufficient for a sustainable rebound of steel mills.
For context, in 2025 Germany reduced steel output by 8.6% compared to 2024, to 34.09 million tons. Last year, basic oxygen furnaces produced 23.64 million tons (-10.7% year-on-year), and electric arc furnaces produced 10.44 million tons (-3.5% year-on-year). Pig iron output fell 10.1% year-on-year to 21.87 million tons, while rolled steel production dropped 5.5% year-on-year to 29.76 million tons.
