The Indian national airline Air India has introduced a new service program called “Cloud Chasers”, specifically tailored to the needs of families and children.
The company is responding to a significant market shift: Internal surveys by the airline indicate a 13 percent growth in the family travel segment between 2024 and 2025. A key element of the initiative is the redesign of the traditional “Maharaja” mascot, which now appears in a child-friendly version on activity kits and first-flight certificates. This measure is part of Air India’s comprehensive transformation under the leadership of the Tata Group, aimed at fundamentally improving the passenger experience on international routes and increasing its competitiveness against the major Gulf carriers.
The new offering includes specially designed play and activity kits distributed to children aged three to nine on selected long-haul flights lasting more than eight hours. These kits contain puzzles, coloring pages, and interactive games to enhance the onboard experience. In addition, the digital in-flight entertainment system has been expanded to include a wide selection of children’s films and educational content. A unique feature remains the distribution of first-flight certificates, which, with the signatures of the cockpit and cabin crew, are personalized and intended to strengthen the bond between young passengers and the brand.
Beyond entertainment, the program offers operational benefits for traveling families. These include priority boarding and dedicated assistance at check-in counters at major hubs such as Delhi and Mumbai. On board, the airline provides bassinets upon request and offers special children’s menus, provided they are pre-ordered. To ensure seamless service, Air India also employs staff specifically trained to handle underage passengers. This service initiative coincides with the fleet modernization, which includes the gradual introduction of new aircraft types, such as the Airbus A350, featuring improved cabin layouts.
Industry experts view this move as a necessary consolidation, given that India is one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets. By focusing on family comfort, the airline aims to secure lucrative market share in the long-haul market to North America, Europe, and Australia. The integration of the “Cloud Chasers” program into the existing onboard structure underscores management’s goal of combining operational efficiency with enhanced service levels. Simultaneously, the company is investing heavily in ground staff training to optimize the entire travel chain for group trips and minimize airport waiting times.
