Thailand: SAIC to launch locally assembled MG4 EV Urban

SAIC imports the MG4 EV Urban into Thailand in completely knocked-down (CKD) kits, which it assembles at a local facility operated through a joint venture with Charoen Pokphand (CP) Group in Chonburi Province. This is its third locally built MG model in the country, following the MG4 EV and MG S5 EV, which entered production in 2023 and 2025, respectively.

While an earlier media report said SAIC could export Thai-built electric cars to Europe, it remains to be seen whether the company is exploring that opportunity for the MG4 EV Urban. In Thailand, it is marketing the second-generation model simply as the ‘MG Urban’, allowing it to distinguish the latest EV from its first-generation model, called ‘MG4’.

SAIC has yet to reveal the specifications or any other details of the MG4 EV Urban in Thailand. The Euro-spec version of the new compact EV is 4,395 mm long, 1,842 mm wide and 1,549 mm tall, and has a 2,750 mm wheelbase. It offers 470 litres of boot space, plus 98 litres of underfloor storage space. Folding the rear seat backs gives 1,362 litres of total luggage space in the cabin.

In Germany, SAIC offers a choice of two electric powertrain configurations, both with a single-motor front-wheel-drive setup. In the base variant, it uses a lower-output motor producing 110 kW and 250 Nm of torque and a 42.8 kWh LFP battery that can be charged at up to 82 kW. The MG4 EV Urban accelerates from 0 to 100 kph in 9.6 seconds, achieves a top speed of 160 kph and delivers a WLTP range of 325 kilometres in this configuration, priced from EUR 24,990.

The top variant upgrades to a higher-output motor that develops 118 kW while delivering the same 250 Nm of torque, as well as a 53.9 kWh LFP battery with a peak charging input of 87 kW. The 0-100 kph acceleration time drops slightly to 9.5 seconds, but the top speed remains 160 kph. The larger battery pack allows the car to travel 416 kilometres on a single charge, also as per WLTP. The extended-range configuration starts at EUR 28,490.
