Why IAG Added Kuala Lumpur to Its Cold Chain Network

IAG Cargo has added a station at Kuala Lumpur International Airport to its Constant Climate cold chain network, the airline group’s cargo division announced August 18th. The addition brings IAG Cargo’s Asia-Pacific footprint to 13 Constant Climate-approved stations and its global network to roughly 100.1

The Kuala Lumpur station is GDP-certified and equipped to handle both active and passive temperature-controlled pharmaceutical shipments, including vaccines, biotech products and diagnostic samples, according to the company. It is served by a daily flight between Kuala Lumpur and London Heathrow, IAG Cargo’s primary cold chain hub.

Why Is IAG Cargo Expanding Its Asia-Pacific Cold Chain Footprint?

The expansion tracks a broader shift in demand toward biologics distribution across Asia-Pacific. The pharmaceutical segment of the region’s cold chain market is projected to grow at a 10.9% compound annual rate through 2032, faster than any other product category in the region, according to a 2026 market analysis.2 The report attributes that growth to expanding biologics manufacturing capacity, buildout of vaccine distribution infrastructure and tightening Good Distribution Practice compliance mandates across the region.

In a press release, Jordan Kohlbeck, head of pharmaceutical at IAG Cargo, said the expansion reflects that same demand pattern. “Adding Kuala Lumpur to our Constant Climate network further enhances IAG Cargo’s presence in Southeast Asia, strengthening both our origin and destination capabilities for pharmaceutical and healthcare shipments. It expands our regional coverage and offers customers greater flexibility when moving temperature-sensitive goods across the globe.”1

Kohlbeck said the expansion reflects the growing demand for reliable cold chain solutions, “driven by ongoing innovation in life sciences and the increasing need for fast, temperature-controlled transport of biologics, cell and gene therapies, and personalised medicines – all of which rely on the speed and precision that air cargo uniquely provides.”1

How Does the Kuala Lumpur Route Fit Into IAG Cargo’s Network?

The company said the daily Kuala Lumpur-London Heathrow schedule was designed with pharma shipments in mind, optimized for service quality and reliability.1 An early morning arrival into London Heathrow allows same-day connections to a number of key Constant Climate stations across the network, according to the company, helping ensure faster, more secure delivery of pharmaceutical shipments worldwide.

The Kuala Lumpur launch follows the recent Global Cargo Joint Business between IAG Cargo, Qatar Airways Cargo and MASkargo, which the company said further strengthens connectivity across the carriers’ combined air cargo networks.1 IAG Cargo already provides third-party handling services for MASkargo at Heathrow, and pharmaceutical shipments routed through the hub connect onward to other Constant Climate stations globally.
