Southeast Asia’s largest airport receives 16.9 million passengers in first quarter

Southeast Asia's largest airport receives 16.9 million passengers in first quarter

Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Southeast Asia’s largest airport by land area, handled 16.9 million passengers in the first quarter of 2026, up 14.4% year-on-year, driven by festive travel and expanding connectivity.

Airport operator Malaysia Airports said ongoing upgrades to facilities and operations are enhancing passenger flow and overall efficiency, Xinhua News Agency reported.

Connectivity also continued to expand, with three new international airlines joining the network in March, The Star newspaper reported.

Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Sepang spans roughly 100 square kilometers, making it Southeast Asia’s largest airport by land area and a key hub for both domestic and international air travel.

Its Terminal 1 underwent an upgrade worth RM30 million (US$7 million) last year as Malaysia witnessed a surge in tourist numbers.
