The strategic cooperation agreement was signed in Hanoi on June 1, focusing on the management and operation of electrified railways, urban railways and human resource development to support large-scale railway projects in Vietnam.

The signing ceremony took place during the visit of a Guangzhou municipal delegation led by Vice Mayor Lai Zhihong.

Speaking at the ceremony, VNR Chairman Dang Sy Manh said demand for urban railway development in Vietnam is enormous. By 2035, Hanoi is expected to put into operation seven additional metro lines with a combined length of nearly 400km, while Ho Chi Minh City is projected to operate six lines totaling about 183km.

VNR said the two sides are currently working together to study the operation package for the light rail line in Phu Quoc, while also exploring cooperation opportunities in other urban railway projects, including the Bau Bang – Cai Mep route.

Beyond operational cooperation, VNR has proposed that Guangzhou Metro share its experience in managing electrified railways, developing transit-oriented development (TOD) models, building smart railway systems and training high-quality personnel.

Recognizing VNR’s role in Vietnam’s transport infrastructure development strategy, Guangzhou Vice Mayor Lai Zhihong said stronger cooperation between the two sides would contribute to the modernization of Vietnam’s railway network and support the country’s goal of developing a national railway system spanning approximately 7,000km under current planning.
