Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is gearing up for an enormous travel surge this May Day holiday, with the surge amplified by the third phase of the internationally renowned Canton Fair. Officials confirm that more than 1.2 million travellers are expected to pass through the airport in a short window. Domestic travel demand will be especially high to major Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Chongqing and Nanjing.
This extraordinary volume marks it as one of the busiest travel periods of the year at Guangzhou Airport, demanding careful planning from travellers to avoid delays and ensure smooth transit.

Airport Ready: Key Operational Measures Announced

To handle the extraordinary passenger flow, airport authorities have implemented enhanced passenger service measures. These include priority security lanes for visitors linked to the Canton Fair and expanded “one‑stop” facilities for international travellers at Terminals 2 and 3. Dedicated support staff will be on hand across all gates to assist passengers with queries, helping to expedite both check‑in and security procedures.
The airport has also outlined designated fast‑track channels across all three terminals to distribute passenger traffic more efficiently and minimise queue times.

Crucial Check‑in Rules for Travellers

Travel professionals and passengers must follow strict check‑in timings to avoid being denied boarding. For domestic flights, check‑in counters and baggage drop close 40 minutes before departure. Passengers without checked luggage are encouraged to use online check‑in. Certain China Southern Air Shuttle services permit security checks and boarding up to 15 minutes before departure, subject to airline updates.
For international flights, travellers must complete check‑in and baggage drop at least 60 minutes before the scheduled departure time. These measures are not only safety requirements but essential for efficient passenger movement during peak traffic.

Public Transport Strongly Recommended

With potentially heavy ground traffic due to the surge, airport authorities strongly recommend travellers use public transport options, such as metro lines and airport shuttle buses. Relying on public transport will help alleviate congestion on access roads and reduce stress for passengers heading to gates.
If disruptions occur on flight schedules, passengers are advised to work directly with official airline channels for rebooking or information and to avoid informal third‑party services which may lack updated flight data or support.

Weather Forecast Could Impact Travel Plans

Weather forecasts indicate increasing thunderstorm activity around Guangzhou from 2–5 May, with heavier rainfall and strong winds possible around the peak of the May Day travel period. Although conditions on 1 May are expected to remain stable, travellers should anticipate potential flight schedule changes or ground transport delays as weather systems move through the region.
Passengers are urged to monitor weather reports regularly and check flight updates via official airline or airport channels as conditions evolve.

Special Tips for Canton Fair Participants

Participants attending the Canton Fair — one of China’s most significant international trade events — will benefit from priority screening lanes and expanded services at all terminals.
These measures are designed to handle the influx of international delegates and offer smoother immigration and security experiences. Dedicated airport staff will be available to help with directions, documentation queries, and transit needs. Frequent travellers and exhibitors alike should make use of these dedicated channels to save time.

Important Aviation Safety Rules for Carry‑Ons

Airport officials have reminded all travellers to strictly adhere to civil aviation safety regulations — particularly for personal electronic items such as power banks and lithium batteries:

  • Power banks are not allowed in checked baggage.
  • They must display appropriate “3C” certification to be permitted.
  • Unlabelled, unclear or recalled devices are strictly prohibited.
  • Devices under 100 Wh are allowed.
  • Devices between 100–160 Wh require airline approval and are limited to two units.
  • Devices over 160 Wh or unverified in capacity are forbidden.
  • In‑flight charging is not permitted; devices must remain switched off.
  • Excessive quantities for personal use are not permitted.

These rules are mandated by national civil aviation safety authorities and must be followed without exception to ensure passenger safety and security.

What This Means for Travellers

This period marks a major transport peak at one of China’s largest aviation hubs. Travellers planning spring or business travel around Guangzhou should:

  • Arrive earlier than usual to avoid delays.
  • Complete online check‑in wherever possible.
  • Use public transport to and from the airport.
  • Stay updated with official airline notifications.
  • Maintain compliance with safety regulations for carry‑on items.

These steps help reduce stress, prevent missed flights, and support a smooth travel experience during one of the busiest times of the year.

Final Travel Advisory: Stay Informed, Stay Prepared

In summary, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is fully operational with expanded services ready to handle the combined travel surge from May Day holiday traffic and the Canton Fair. Travellers should be proactive in planning, particularly with check‑in routines, safety compliance, and transport logistics. A little preparation goes a long way when navigating peak travel periods at major international airports.
