Showers on Sunday, expect more today

New Delhi: The city got light to moderate rainfall Sunday and the Met expects moderate to heavy rainfall in isolated areas on Monday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert. It also expects a drop in the temperature Monday. The rain, which was intense in some areas, led to waterlogging and traffic snarls.Twelve Delhi-bound flights, including four international ones, were also diverted to Jaipur. The diverted international flights were Thai Airways TG323 from Bangkok, IndiGo 6E064 from Jeddah, Air Astana KC907 from Almaty and Air India AI4308 from Dubai. The domestic flights included Air India flights from Kolkata, Hyderabad, Varanasi, Pune and Mumbai, and IndiGo flights from Bengaluru and Ahmedabad.Sunday, base station Safdarjung logged 6.4 mm rainfall between 8.30 am to 5.30 pm, which is considered light rain. Chhatarpur got 48.5 mm rainfall, which was the highest, followed by Palam at 16.4 mm, Ridge at 10.2 mm, Ayanagar 8.2 mm and Janakpuri at 7 mm.The southwest monsoon arrived in Delhi Thursday, against its normal onset date of June 27.The IMD classifies rainfall as light when it is up to 15.5 mm, moderate when rainfall is from 15.6 mm to 64.4 mm, and heavy when it is more than 64.4 mm in a 24-hour period. The maximum temperature at Safdarjung, however, rose to 38.6 degrees Celsius, two notches above the normal and also higher than 35.4 degrees Celsius Saturday. The relative humidity oscillated between 55% and 98% in the past 24 hours. As intense rain lashed parts of Delhi, PWD was flooded with waterlogging complaints from west and south-east Delhi. The affected stretches included MB Road, the Mundka area, Jahangirpuri and near Moolchand metro station, where sources said PWD teams were working to drain out water and restore traffic movement. Videos of waterlogging on Dwarka Expressway emerged while similar videos from Chhatarpur, Karawal Nagar and near the Tughlaqabad Biodiversity Park also popped up.In contrast, east Delhi did not get significant rainfall.Monday, the maximum temperature is likely to hover around 31-33 degrees Celsius. The air quality remained moderate with an AQI of 161 Sunday.
