MALAYSIA: A man has been arrested following a three-vehicle collision along the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) heading towards the Duta Toll Plaza in Kuala Lumpur on 9 May.
Police said the incident, which occurred at approximately 10.52pm, involved a Proton Inspira, Proton Wira and Toyota Hilux.
The case gained public attention after video footage of the crash circulated on social media.
Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief ACP Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa confirmed that investigations were launched after authorities detected the viral recording online.
Initial findings of the crash
According to ACP Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa, preliminary investigations showed that the Proton Inspira, driven by a 26-year-old local man, had reportedly skidded and come to a stop in the right lane of the highway.
A Proton Wira driven by a 40-year-old Indonesian man then collided with the stationary vehicle.
A Toyota Hilux driven by a 41-year-old local man subsequently crashed into the Proton Inspira as well.
ACP Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the impact caused the Proton Inspira and Toyota Hilux to veer off to the left side of the road before hitting a roadside barrier.
No injuries reported
Authorities confirmed that all drivers involved in the collision did not sustain any injuries.
However, the Toyota Hilux suffered damage to its rear bumper, reversing sensor, front bonnet, front bumper and water tank.
The Proton Wira sustained damage to its bumpers, bonnet, headlights and fenders.
The extent of damage to the Proton Inspira remains under investigation.
Arrest and legal action
Police have arrested the driver of the Proton Inspira to assist with investigations.
The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which relates to reckless and dangerous driving.
Investigators are also reviewing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage, recording witness statements, and conducting inspections and photographic documentation of the vehicles involved.
Public attention following viral video
The incident gained traction online after video footage showing multiple vehicles involved in the crash circulated on social media platforms.
Authorities have since confirmed that the viral material formed part of the initial trigger for the formal investigation into the incident.
