Universal Studios Japan is adding an intense attraction to this year’s Halloween Horror Nights exclusively for guests aged 18 and over.

The new experience, which requires guests to sign a waiver before entering, is the first attraction in the history of Halloween Horror Nights to be restricted to visitors over the age of 18.

It is called Zanzō, which translates to ‘Afterimage’, though it is listed on the Universal Studios Japan website as ‘Lights Out: Nightmare Isolation’.

Guests should expect “isolation”, “confinement”, and “true torment unlike anything you have seen before”, the website says.

“The line between illusion and reality dissolves, and you find yourself staring into the abyss,” it adds. “Face the nightmare. If you dare.”

Guests who are “uncomfortable with grotesque imagery” should not take part in the eerie experience regardless of their age, according to Universal Studios Japan.

The attraction includes elements that “may cause fear, disgust, distress, or excessive stress”, and the website warns that guests will be alone in a room and also sprayed with liquid during the experience.

In addition, guests are strictly prohibited from disclosing or sharing details on the content or interior of the attraction, including on social media or in conversation.

“If you are found to have violated this rule, you may be asked to delete the post or leave the attraction,” the park says.

At Universal’s US parks, this year’s Halloween Horror Nights will feature haunted houses inspired by Fortnite, the new Evil Dead Burn film, 1987 film Hellraiser, the fifth and final season of Stranger Things, and award-winning film Sinners.
