Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu has reiterated his call to his Iranian counterpart for vessels remaining in the Persian Gulf to be able to safely pass through the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible.

While visiting the east African country of Kenya, Motegi spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi over the phone early on Sunday, Japan time. The talks were held at the request of Iran and lasted about 20 minutes.

This is the fifth telephone talks between the two ministers since March.

Araghchi gave an explanation to Motegi about what is going on over his country’s conflict with the United States, including recent exchanges with Washington.

Motegi then said Japan strongly hopes that the ceasefire will be maintained, and that Iran’s talks with the US will resume soon and lead to a final agreement. He also called on Iran to show maximum flexibility.

Motegi added that Japan places importance on ensuring that vessels from all countries can pass freely and safely through the Strait of Hormuz.

The two ministers confirmed that they will continue to maintain close communication.
