India and Japan are set to deepen business cooperation in semiconductors and electronics, with Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) expected during a major Indian business mission to Japan.
Led by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, the four-day India-Japan business mission will take place from August 24 to 27 across Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka. It is being described as India’s largest-ever business delegation to Japan.
FICCI Director General Jyoti Vij said high-technology sectors such as semiconductors and electronics will be among the key areas where the two countries can expand cooperation. “High-technology areas such as semiconductors and electronics are key domains where both nations can build greater strength and expand mutual cooperation,” Vij told ANI.
The delegation comprises more than 200 business representatives from sectors including manufacturing, semiconductors, clean energy, steel, automotive, financial services, healthcare and startups.
According to Vij, several MoUs have already been finalised, with more expected to be signed during or after the India-Japan business mission.
“By the time this mission concludes, you will definitely see MoU signings,” she said.
The delegation is also expected to hold at least 200 B2B meetings, along with networking sessions and around 15 site visits.
Semiconductors and electronics are emerging as important areas of India-Japan economic cooperation, with the business mission aimed at creating greater opportunities for companies from both countries.
The planned site visits will take Indian businesses to Japanese manufacturing plants, innovation centres and other facilities, giving them an opportunity to understand Japanese technologies and manufacturing capabilities.
Vij said the visits could help unlock opportunities by giving businesses direct exposure to technological innovations.
Indian startups are also participating in the delegation and are expected to explore Japan’s innovation ecosystem and identify potential areas for partnerships.
The mission’s agenda extends beyond technology. Traditional sectors including automotive, steel, manufacturing and clean energy are also represented, reflecting the wider scope of India-Japan trade and investment ties.
During the visit, Piyush Goyal is scheduled to meet prominent Japanese CEOs and industry leaders.
The discussions will focus on strengthening business engagement while understanding the priorities and concerns of Japanese companies, Vij said.
The India-Japan business mission comes as both countries seek to deepen their Special Strategic and Global Partnership, with greater trade, investment, technology cooperation and business-to-business engagement.
The key takeaway from the visit could come in the form of the expected MoU signings. But the larger test will be whether the meetings and site visits translate into actual investments, technology partnerships and new business opportunities between India and Japan.
