Victor Lai etched his name into Canadian badminton history on Sunday, becoming the first Canadian ever to win a BWF World Tour Super 1000 tournament with a commanding 21-19, 21-8 victory over Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie in the men’s singles final of the POLYTRON Indonesia Open 2026.

Competing before a packed crowd at Istora Senayan, Lai capped a remarkable week by defeating four top-20 opponents, including world No. 6 Chou Tien Chen in a thrilling three-game semifinal. The Canadian won 10 of 11 games throughout the tournament and claimed the prestigious title, worth $101,500 US in prize money and 12,000 world ranking points.

“It feels amazing,” said Lai following the match. “Thank you to all the fans. You really helped me through the week. The badminton is the best in the world.”

The victory continues a breakthrough 12 months for the world No. 14, who has also recorded podium finishes at the BWF World Championships and All England Open, along with titles at the Pan Am Individual Championships and now the Indonesia Open.

“What a tournament for Victor,” said Badminton Canada National Team Head Coach Mike Butler. “He had several decisive wins against top players in the world and capped it off against one of Indonesia’s finest. The future is bright for a now top-10 Canadian player.”

Canadian fans will get their first chance to see Lai compete at home when he headlines the YONEX Canada Open from June 30 to July 5 at the Markham Pan Am Centre in Markham, Ont.
