Jakarta, 20 July 2026 — Indonesia is reaching more children with lifesaving vaccines, according to the latest global estimates released by WHO and UNICEF. New data show that more children are protected by completing their basic immunization schedule, demonstrating continued progress in protecting children from vaccine-preventable diseases.
According to the recently published 2025 WHO/UNICEF Estimates of National Immunization Coverage (WUENIC), Indonesia has improved coverage with the third dose of diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis containing vaccine (DTP3) and the third dose of hepatitis B vaccine (HepB3). Both increased from 78% in 2024 to 82% in 2025. This means in 2025, more than 3.6 million children in Indonesia received the full course of vaccines needed to protect them against these serious diseases.
Indonesia made further progress in reaching children with immunization services. The estimated number of children who had not received any vaccine dose decreased from 748 000 in 2024 to 657 000 in 2025. This means that tens of thousands more children gained access to life-saving vaccines and the protection they provide.
“Indonesia’s progress shows what is possible when we work together to reach children with lifesaving vaccines,” said Dr N. Paranietharan, WHO Representative to Indonesia. “At the same time, too many children are still missing vaccines that protect against diseases such as measles, polio and pneumonia. Sustaining progress will require stronger routine immunization services, focused efforts to reach underserved populations and continued investment in high-quality immunization programmes. Together, we can achieve the Immunization Agenda 2030 goal of leaving no one behind.”
UNICEF Indonesia Representative, Maniza Zaman, said, “Immunization is one of the most effective public health interventions and a cornerstone of every child’s right to good health. We congratulate the Government of Indonesia, health workers and communities across the country for the notable progress made in reducing the number of zero-dose children. These gains demonstrate what can be achieved through strong leadership, innovation and active community engagement. We need to build on and accelerate this good progress so that every child, including those who remain unreached or under-immunized, is reached with life-saving vaccines.”
While overall immunization coverage remains strong, progress has been uneven across different vaccines. More girls received the HPV vaccine in 2025, strengthening protection against cervical cancer later in life. At the same time, coverage for several other vaccines remained unchanged or declined, meaning some children may be missing important protection against diseases such as tuberculosis, pneumonia and measles.
Maintaining high coverage across all vaccines is essential. When fewer children are vaccinated, diseases can spread more easily and outbreaks become more likely. Ensuring that every child receives every recommended vaccine on time helps keep families, communities and future generations healthy.
To build on progress, WHO and UNICEF are supporting the Government of Indonesia, focusing on:
- reaching unimmunized children, particularly in underserved and hard-to-reach communities;
- improving coverage of vaccines to prevent priority diseases, such as measles, rubella, polio and pneumococcal infection; and
- strengthening routine immunization systems and vaccine-preventable disease surveillance, including the use of local data to identify and reach missed children and maintain high-quality services.
These national efforts are part of a broader goal across the Western Pacific Region to ensure that more people are protected by vaccines throughout their lives. By 2030, countries and partners are working to halve the number of children who miss out on essential vaccines, achieve and sustain measles and rubella elimination, and expand access to vaccines at all ages, including HPV vaccination to help prevent cervical cancer.
Immunization remains one of the best investments in public health. Every US$ 1 invested in immunization can generate up to US$ 54 in health, social and economic benefits by preventing disease, reducing health-care costs, avoiding outbreaks and supporting healthier, more productive societies.
