Leonardo, Indonesian defense company PT ESystem Solutions, and the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Indonesia have signed a letter of intent (LOI) covering the potential supply and support of AW149 naval helicopters for the Indonesian Navy.

The agreement also includes plans to establish local technical assistance, maintenance, completion, and training capabilities in Indonesia, supporting the development of the country’s aerospace and defense industrial base.

If converted into a contract, the program would see AW149 helicopters delivered for both land-based and embarked operations, to enhance Indonesia’s emergency response capabilities as part of its ongoing naval modernization efforts.

It would also further expand the presence of Leonardo in the Indonesian helicopter market, particularly in rescue, law enforcement and passenger transport requirements.

The AW149 is a latest-generation multi-role medium-weight military helicopter designed to meet the most demanding needs of armed forces. It is in service internationally to perform a wide range of missions, including tactical transport, utility, close support, MEDEVAC/CASEVAC, SAR and combat search and rescue. Its selection in Indonesia would further strengthen its presence in Southeast Asia.

The LOI further expands cooperation between Leonardo and PT ESystem Solutions following the launch of Indonesia’s M-346 F Block 20 light fighter program. The agreement reflects continued collaboration between the companies and Indonesia’s Ministry of Defense, while supporting efforts to develop the country’s aerospace and defense capabilities.
