The veterans ministry on Wednesday signed a preliminary agreement with India’s defense ministry to commemorate Indian veterans who participated in the 1950-53 Korean War as medical personnel, officials said.

Veteran Minister Kwon Oh-eul signed the memorandum of understanding with India’s Defense Minister Rajnath Singh at a memorial set up to honor India’s contributions to the Korean War at Imjingak in Paju, north of Seoul, according to the ministry.

Under the agreement, the two countries agreed to cooperate on exchange programs for descendants of Korean War veterans, academic and cultural projects highlighting India’s contribution to the war, and the establishment of memorial facilities.

Following the signing ceremony, the two officials attended the unveiling of South Korea’s first memorial dedicated to India’s role in the Korean War.

India dispatched 627 medical personnel to a field hospital during the Korean War, the largest number among countries that provided medical assistance to South Korea during the three-year conflict.
