Why Stock Connect Excludes AI IPOs: Hong Kong Investors Miss Mainland Listings – News and Statistics

Investors in Hong Kong have been unable to participate in a recent surge of high-profile initial public offerings by Chinese artificial intelligence companies on the mainland, according to a report from the South China Morning Post.

The Stock Connect scheme, which has served as a major channel for cross-border stock trading since its launch in November 2014 by Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX) and the Shanghai Stock Exchange, does not cover IPOs. This gap has frustrated cross-border traders in recent months, as they have missed out on a wave of blockbuster listings by AI firms.

Similarly, mainland investors have been unable to take advantage of a string of recent IPOs by artificial intelligence companies in Hong Kong. The scheme allows international investors to trade Shanghai stocks through a Hong Kong broker, while mainland investors can trade Hong Kong shares via a Shanghai broker. Two years after its launch, the scheme expanded to include the Shenzhen Stock Market, and has since added bonds, swaps, exchange-traded funds, and a Wealth Management Connect scheme.

In the first quarter of this year, average daily turnover on the Stock Connect’s southbound channel—where mainland investors trade Hong Kong stocks—reached HK$122.5 billion (US$15.6 billion), an 11% increase year on year, according to HKEX data. Meanwhile, the northbound channel—where Hong Kong investors trade mainland stocks—saw daily turnover jump 70% to 324.1 billion yuan (US$47.4 billion).

Despite these volumes, the absence of an IPO connect means Hong Kong investors have not been able to subscribe to a series of red-hot IPOs on the mainland in recent months. The report explains why Stock Connect does not cover AI firm IPOs and discusses how the problem could be resolved.
