Hong Kong Stocks Surge as Tech Shares Rally and Oil Prices Drop | May 8, 2026 – News and Statistics

Hong Kong stocks advanced on Thursday, driven by gains in technology shares, following a decline in crude oil prices and a positive session on Wall Street overnight. The market was further supported by easing geopolitical tensions.

According to a report from the South China Morning Post, the benchmark Hang Seng Index opened 1.2 percent, or 317 points, higher at 26,531, reclaiming the 26,500 level. The Hang Seng Tech Index rose 2.4 percent to 5,089.

Major technology companies led the rally. Alibaba Group Holding climbed nearly 4 percent, while Baidu advanced almost 5 percent.

In contrast, oil producers declined as crude prices retreated. PetroChina fell more than 3 percent, and CNOOC lost over 2 percent.

Investor sentiment improved after the current President of the United States, Donald Trump, expressed optimism about developments related to the Iran conflict, which helped alleviate concerns over potential energy supply disruptions and inflationary pressures.
