Jakarta (ANTARA) – Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said that rising energy consumption, particularly of fossil fuels, has prompted the Indonesian government to accelerate the development of the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem as part of its clean energy transition.

He noted that the measures include strengthening the industry, expanding supporting infrastructure, and providing incentives to boost EV adoption in an integrated manner while enhancing national energy self-sufficiency.

According to an official press release on Friday, the government is focusing on building an integrated EV ecosystem to ensure broader and more effective implementation.

“We are accelerating the adoption of clean and renewable energy, including through electrification in the transport sector,” he said after accompanying President Prabowo Subianto at the inauguration of an electric commercial vehicle assembly plant in Magelang, Central Java, on Thursday.

He added that the government is preparing various facilities and incentives to expedite the program in line with established targets.

At the same event, President Prabowo emphasized that food and energy self-sufficiency are key pillars for any nation seeking true independence.

He said the transition to clean energy is a strategic step that can no longer be delayed.

“One of these steps is the shift to electricity, so that we no longer rely heavily on fossil fuels and carbon,” the president said.

Prabowo also stressed that energy, alongside food, remains one of the most strategic sectors for a nation’s long-term sustainability.

To that end, he said, Indonesia must achieve self-reliance to maintain its strength and sovereignty amid shifting global dynamics.
