Rina Sonowal Kouli, a 1994-batch Indian Information Service (IIS) officer, has been appointed as the new Director General of Doordarshan, the public broadcaster announced on social media.

Prior to her appointment, Kouli was serving as Joint Secretary in the Department of Higher Education. On August 1, she was prematurely repatriated to her parent cadre to avail the benefit of promotion in the cadre.

She was appointed to the post for a five-year tenure in 2023, ending in January 2028. However, her deputation has been curtailed to enable her to avail the benefit of promotion in her parent cadre.

Doordarshan, in a statement, welcomed Kouli as its new Director General and said it looks forward to her leadership and guidance in further strengthening the organisation, expanding its reach and building deeper engagement with audiences.
