Showdown in Indonesia’s Solo pits Widodo’s dynasty against Megawati’s machine

The rivalry between two of Indonesia’s former presidents is moving onto the political ground where their alliance was first forged, with Joko Widodo’s youngest son preparing to contest the constituency held by Megawati Sukarnoputri’s daughter.

Kaesang Pangarep plans to seek a parliamentary seat in Central Java V in 2029. The constituency has been represented since 2009 by House Speaker Puan Maharani – one of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle’s (PDI-P) most prominent figures and the offspring of the woman whose party carried Widodo from Solo’s city hall to the presidency.

Kaesang, who chairs the upstart Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI), announced the plan at a party meeting in Solo on July 25. Central Java V covers Solo, Boyolali, Klaten and Sukoharjo, combining Widodo’s home base with one of PDI-P’s long-standing strongholds.

That makes the race a prospective proxy contest between two political families at very different stages of dynastic power. Analysts see it as part of Widodo’s broader challenge to Megawati and PDI-P – an effort to turn his family’s recent rise and PSI into a durable political machine capable of competing with a party rooted in the legacy of Megawati’s father, Indonesia’s first president Sukarno.

Marcus Mietzner, a professor of political and social change at the Australian National University and author of Ruling Indonesia, a recent study of Widodo’s decade in office, described Kaesang’s candidacy as “the boldest expression of this challenge so far”.

It is not necessarily a winner-takes-all duel – Indonesia’s proportional electoral system could allow both Kaesang and Puan to secure seats.

However, a strong showing by Kaesang and PSI would suggest Widodo can convert his personal popularity into lasting family influence, but a poor result could underline PDI-P’s political resilience at a time when PSI is also navigating an uncertain future outside President Prabowo Subianto’s governing coalition.
