National unity minister says Orang Asal heritage part of Malaysia’s national identity, not separate

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 9 — The heritage of Malaysia’s indigenous peoples (Orang Asal) is part of the country’s national legacy and identity, rather than belonging solely to the communities themselves, National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said.

In a Facebook post marking the 2026 International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples today, he said efforts to empower indigenous communities should move in tandem with national development without allowing their languages, customs and traditional knowledge to become marginalised.

He said the country’s progress should provide more opportunities for indigenous youth to excel in education, the economy and leadership while preserving their cultural roots and identity.

“Malaysia is fortunate to have indigenous communities that are an important part of the country’s history and identity.

“The languages, arts, customs, traditional knowledge, relationship with nature and values passed down through generations are a significant part of Malaysia’s rich identity,” he said.

At the international level, Aaron said the United Nations (UN) recognised indigenous peoples as custodians and practitioners of unique cultural traditions and knowledge systems, including those related to environmental and biodiversity conservation.

According to him, in terms of national unity, indigenous communities are part of the Malaysian family, and the country’s diversity is a strength that shapes its identity rather than something that divides it.

“By respecting every community, preserving its heritage and valuing its contributions, we are building a more inclusive, harmonious and united country,” he said.

Aaron also urged all parties to renew their commitment to respecting indigenous identities, promoting their dignity and recognising their contributions to Malaysia.

“Their heritage is our shared heritage, and their identity forms part of Malaysia’s identity,” he said.

Observed annually on Aug 9, the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples was designated by the UN General Assembly in 1994 through Resolution 49/214 to commemorate the first meeting of the United Nations Working Group on Indigenous Populations in 1982. — Bernama
