Visitors can continue to the Silpa Bhirasri Memorial National Museum, which presents the life and work of Silpa Bhirasri, a central figure in the development of modern Thai art.

Another stop is the Thaworn Watthu Building, commonly known as the Red Building. Designed by Prince Narisara Nuvadtivongs, it houses valuable Thai scripture cabinets and an exhibition on the life and royal duties of King Rama V.

The Bangkok National Museum is one of the route’s main destinations, giving visitors access to antiquities, works of art and important objects illustrating the development of Thai art across different historical periods.

The trail also includes the National Theatre, which has served for more than 60 years as a major venue for Thai dance, music and performing arts.

Other connected sites include the National Gallery on Chao Fa Road and Wat Bowonsathan Sutthawat, also known as the Front Palace Temple of the Emerald Buddha. Together, the locations present different aspects of Rattanakosin Island’s history, architecture, art and former communities.

Thai textiles take centre stage

The Bangkok National Museum will also host Siam Phattharaphon Philai, Thoet Thai Phra Phan Pi, a special exhibition honouring the Queen Mother’s contribution to the conservation, development and promotion of Thai textiles and traditional dress.

The exhibition brings together 111 textile items selected from national museums in Bangkok and the provinces, the central storage facility for national museum collections and the National Library.

Its five sections cover the historical development of weaving; weaving tools and techniques; ethnic clothing; textiles associated with religious texts and ceremonies; and the continuation of Thai textile traditions under royal patronage.

Items on display include pha sompak pum, pha sin thio muk chok dao, Chiang Saen-style pha sin, pha sin mi ta tor tin chok and juan tani cloth.

The exhibition will run from August 12 to October 4, 2026, at the Issaravinitchai Throne Hall in the Bangkok National Museum.

The Fine Arts Department’s Office of Performing Arts will stage Yon Sangkhit Sin Thin Rong Lakhon Haeng Chat, a programme of Thai music, dance and theatre, at the National Theatre at 2pm on August 12.

The programme includes a soft-mallet piphat ensemble, a tribute performance, a dance presenting textiles from Thailand’s four regions, Mon music and singing, Western-style music and a performance by National Artist Pakorn Pornpisut.

It will conclude with a khon production based on the Ramakien, accompanied by an orchestra and piphat ensemble.

All seats for the August 12 performance have been booked, prompting the department to add another show at 2pm on August 23.

Tickets for the additional performance are priced at 400, 300, 200, 150 and 100 baht. Online reservations will open at 9.30am on August 11, and buyers must register as National Theatre members before purchasing tickets.
