..environmental conservation cannot be carried out by the government alone.

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Jakarta Provincial Government planted 21,060 mangrove seedlings simultaneously across five coastal locations on Sunday to mark World Mangrove Day and reinforce the capital’s coastal defenses.

Led by Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno, the mass planting effort mobilized nearly 350 participants representing local government agencies, universities, schools, private companies, environmental organizations, and local communities.

The simultaneous planting took place at five strategic sites in North Jakarta: the Angke Kapuk Production Forest, the Angke Kapuk Protection Forest, the PT KCN Port area, the Muara Angke Ekomarin Area, and the Muara Angke KOMAH Area.

The main event was held at the Angke Kapuk Nature Tourism Park in Penjaringan.

The site utilizes a 1.73-hectare plot acquired through a Forest Area Use Permit (IPPKH) compensation scheme involving developer PT Kapuk Naga Indah. The area will be developed into a dedicated coastal reforestation zone.

The initiative also forms part of a broader series of events leading up to Jakarta’s 500th anniversary celebrations.

Addressing participants, Deputy Governor Rano emphasized that safeguarding the city’s coastline requires sustained collaboration among multiple stakeholders, ensuring that environmental efforts extend beyond ceremonial events into long-term maintenance and monitoring.

“This collaboration demonstrates that environmental conservation cannot be carried out by the government alone. It requires the participation of the government, universities, schools, business leaders, communities, and the public,” Rano said.

Through the expanded planting drive, the provincial administration aims to strengthen coastal ecosystems, increase urban green open space, and raise public awareness about preserving marine ecosystems.
