Hong Kong Trade Growth May 2026: Export and Import Volume Surge – News and Statistics

Hong Kong’s merchandise trade saw significant growth in May 2026, according to data released on July 16, 2026, by the Census and Statistics Department.

The volume of total exports of goods and imports of goods rose by 25.8% and 27.4% respectively compared to May 2025. Prices also increased, with total exports up 11.8% and imports up 11.1% year-on-year. The terms of trade index improved by 0.6% over the same period.

For the first five months of 2026, export volume grew 27.6% and import volume rose 31.0% compared to the same period in 2025. Prices for exports and imports increased by 6.7% and 6.5% respectively, while the terms of trade index edged up 0.2%.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, comparing the three-month period ending May 2026 with the preceding three months, export volume increased by 10.8% and import volume by 11.0%.

Trade by Destination and Supplier

The growth in total export volume in May 2026 was mainly driven by shipments to Taiwan (70.7%), Vietnam (48.9%), the USA (40.4%), and Chinese Mainland (31.2%). Export price increases were primarily contributed by Chinese Mainland (13.2%), Vietnam (11.9%), the USA (11.2%), Taiwan (10.0%), and India (10.0%).

On the import side, volume growth was mainly led by Korea (67.2%), Vietnam (57.4%), Chinese Mainland (35.0%), Singapore (14.8%), and Taiwan (3.1%). Import price increases were chiefly driven by Korea (24.3%), Taiwan (16.5%), Chinese Mainland (11.7%), Singapore (9.7%), and Vietnam (8.6%).

Trade by End-use Category

Export volume growth in May 2026 was mainly supported by raw materials and semi-manufactures (41.1%) and capital goods (19.2%). Export price increases were primarily from raw materials and semi-manufactures (14.1%) and capital goods (10.6%).

Import volume growth was mainly driven by raw materials and semi-manufactures (38.3%) and capital goods (24.6%). Import price increases were chiefly from raw materials and semi-manufactures (12.5%), capital goods (10.0%), and fuels (64.6%).
