MELBOURNE – Australia will export uranium to India for nuclear energy under an arrangement signed on Thursday by Prime Ministers Anthony Albanese and Narendra Modi.

Albanese said in a statement that he and Modi signed an arrangement to enable uranium exports to India for peaceful purposes under an existing nuclear cooperation agreement while meeting in Melbourne for the third annual Australia-India summit on Thursday.

Addressing reporters alongside Modi after the meeting, Albanese said that the relationship between Australia and India has never been stronger.

“We share a focus on deepening and diversifying the relationship between our countries so we can continue to grow from strength to strength,” he said.

Modi, who arrived in Melbourne on Wednesday night for an official three-day visit, said that the “important” nuclear energy agreement would give fresh momentum to India’s clean energy objectives.

In addition to the uranium deal, the leaders also agreed to strengthen security and cultural cooperation.
