India will supply Indonesia with Russian-Indian-made BrahMos missiles and India-developed Astra missiles, a source in the Indian government said following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Jakarta.
“India will supply Indonesia with the BrahMos missile system and Astra missiles,” the source noted.
BrahMos is a supersonic cruise missile developed as a joint venture between India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya through BrahMos Aerospace.
It is based on the Russian P-800 Oniks missile, features ramjet propulsion for speeds up to Mach 2.8-3, and can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft, or land platforms for anti-ship and land-attack roles. The name combines the Brahmaputra and Moskva rivers, symbolising Indo-Russian collaboration, with the missile entering service in 2007.
Astra is an Indian beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM) family developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for the Indian Air Force and Navy. The Mk-1 variant has a range exceeding 100 km and has undergone successful flight tests from platforms like the Su-30MKI, with production involving multiple Indian industries. Variants with extended ranges are in development to enhance the Indian Air Force and Navy’s capabilities.
