PCI invites news agencies to join Press Council for new term

The Press Council of India (PCI) has invited claims from eligible associations of persons managing news agencies, as well as from individual news agencies, for the reconstitution of its 15th term under the Press Council Act, 1978.

According to a press release issued by the Council, the process is being carried out under Section 5(3)(c) of the Act, which provides representation to news agencies in the statutory media watchdog. The move follows an advertisement published earlier this month in newspapers across the country.

The reconstitution is expected to help ensure broader participation of news agencies in policy discussions related to press freedom, accountability and professional standards.

The Press Council of India is a statutory body set up to preserve the freedom of the press and to maintain and improve standards of newspapers and news agencies in the country. It plays a key role in addressing complaints against the media and safeguarding journalistic ethics.

The reconstitution process is important as news agencies continue to play a crucial role in news dissemination, especially in regional languages and digital platforms. With the media landscape rapidly changing due to digital expansion, representation of news agencies in the Council is seen as necessary to reflect ground realities.

The reconstitution is expected to help ensure broader participation of news agencies in policy discussions related to press freedom, accountability and professional standards.
