The event is hosted by the Publicity Department of the Chongqing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, the Institute of Marxism of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), and the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO), and organized by the Western China International Communication Organization (WCICO).

Under the theme “Advancing Modernization Together, Building a Shared Future,” the symposium will focus on “Mutual Learning and Development of the Global South on Chongqing’s Practice of Chinese Modernization”. Experts and scholars from think tanks across China, Singapore, Hungary, Brazil, Argentina, Australia, Peru, and Syria will gather in Chongqing for site visits, panel discussions, keynote speeches, and roundtable dialogues.

The event will use Chongqing’s local practice as a research window, creating a platform for theoretical research and international communication. The symposium aims to bring together Chinese and international think tanks, experts, communication institutions, and mainstream media to promote exchanges on modernization, civilizational dialogue, and global development cooperation.

Site visits: on the frontlines of Chongqing’s development

From June 16 to 17, Chinese and international experts will visit Chongqing, a pioneer of inland opening-up in China, to conduct field research on the city’s practices in regional connectivity, industrial upgrading, meteorological disaster prevention and mitigation, mega-city governance, and ecological protection.

Through these visits, participants are expected to gain a direct understanding of the rich connotations of Chongqing practices.

International symposium: dialogues on the path to modernization

On June 18, the international symposium will be held at the WCICO. Foreign experts, including Pablo Bormaro, Executive Director of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO), will attend.

Key activities will include the release and signing ceremony of annual key research projects, the establishment of the Expert Committee for the International Symposium on the Global Significance of Chinese Modernization, and the presentation of appointment certificates. The newly revamped international observation column “Global Vision” will also be launched.

During the keynote session, experts will discuss topics including “Chinese Modernization and Its Significance for the Global South,” “Chinese Modernization: a New Pathway for the Rise of a Major Country,” “Chinese Modernization and the Development Transformation of Latin American Countries: Opportunities, Challenges and Cooperation Prospects”, “Green Transition in Chinese Modernization and Cooperation Opportunities with Central and Eastern Europe,” and “Chongqing’s Exploration in Urban Governance and Open Development.”

A roundtable discussion themed “From Development Consensus to Local Practice: Chinese Path to Modernization and the Development Path of the Global South” will explore how Chinese modernization can provide a referential development paradigm for Latin America and other Global South regions.

Themed book exhibition: building bridges for academic dialogue

A themed book exhibition on the “Global Significance of Chinese Modernization” will be held concurrently at the WCICO park. Organized along the thread of “Theory – Practice – Dialogue,” the exhibition will feature The Governance of China, the Six Perspectives of Chinese Modernization series, representative works from CLACSO and the University of Johannesburg, South Africa, as well as local theoretical and practical achievements from Chongqing.
