Wheelock duo crafts leather goods by hand

WHEELOCK — Chances are, when they’re not at their day jobs, Asa and Amanda Keeley can be found in the garage that doubles as their well-appointed studio, putting hand-crafted care into every cut and stitch of the products offered by their small business, Kingdom Leather.  Since 2019, they’ve been creating luxury leather goods from start to finish out of their home, without any of the nasty chemicals and poor labor conditions found with mass-produced products of the same ilk.

Inside their garage, the warm smell of leather lingers in the air — a testament to the quality of each bag and belt in the room.  Complete with a sprawling worktable, three different industrial-sized sewing machines, a newly acquired strap cutting machine, and neatly organized nooks and crannies, the small but effective space doubles as a storefront where customers can come in by appointment and see the items the Keeleys’ produce.  The Chronicle stopped in to catch a glimpse at the process and learn more about how it came to be.

Mr. Keeley, who is originally from New York moved to New England 10 years ago.  He first met his now-wife while working as a farrier, fitting shoes to horses at the barn she worked at in Connecticut. At the time, Mr. Keeley’s ….
