Sigi, C Sulawesi (ANTARA) –

Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) will build temporary housing for earthquake victims in Sigi district, Central Sulawesi, while offering monthly cash assistance to residents who opt out, officials said on Friday.

BNPB Head Suharyanto said affected residents can choose between temporary housing or monthly rental assistance.

“So we offer that those who do not want to move into temporary housing will be given a housing allowance of Rp600,000 per household per month,” he said.

He added that the assistance will continue until permanent homes for residents with heavily damaged houses are rebuilt, a scheme similar to policies used in other disaster-hit regions.

Data from the Sigi District Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) showed 2,319 houses were damaged, consisting of 1,966 lightly damaged, 219 moderately damaged, and 134 heavily damaged units.

A total of 8,586 people from 2,762 households have been affected by the disaster.

The 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck Sigi, Parigi Moutong, Donggala districts, and Palu city in Central Sulawesi on Tuesday at 10:27 a.m. local time.

BNPB said it is coordinating with local authorities to complete data collection on moderately and heavily damaged homes to accelerate recovery efforts.
