Romantic Warrior Eyes Hong Kong Triple Crown Sweep

Romantic Warrior  will attempt to become just the third horse to sweep Hong Kong’s Triple Crown series May 24 when the 8-year-old takes on the challenging 2,400 meters (about 1 1/2 miles) of the Champions & Chater Cup (G1) at Sha Tin Racecourse.

It’s a big ask, even for a horse with a résumé as big as Romantic Warrior’s.

The U.S. Triple Crown is tough in large measure because of the timeframe—three grueling races in the space of five weeks—but Hong Kong’s version is rarely achieved for a different reason.

While the American series is run at distances of 1 3/16 miles, 1 1/4 miles, and 1 1/2 miles, Hong Kong’s requires considerably more versatility in terms of distance.

It starts out at 1,600 meters (about 1 mile) in the Stewards’ Cup (G1) in January, continues with the Hong Kong Gold Cup (G1) in March at 2,000 meters (about 1 1/4 miles), and finishes with the Champions & Chater Cup.

Only two horses have swept the series, which has no age restriction. River Verdon completed the sweep in 1994, and it was not until last year, 31 years later, that Vovage Bubble matched that feat. Not quite the 37-year drought from Affirmed  in 1978 to American Pharoah  in 2015 but, still …

Now, there could be back-to-back sweeps as Romantic Warrior is a solid favorite to add his name to the list with a win in the Champions & Chater.

The globetrotting veteran has won all five starts this season after recovering from surgery on his left front fetlock. He has won 23 of his 30 career starts with grade 1 or group 1 wins in Hong Kong, Japan, Australia, and Dubai. By the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s reckoning, he has won a world-record HK$271.46 million (about US$35.5 million).

However, he is 8. And there is that distance issue.

“It’ll be a challenge,” said trainer Danny Shum after his superstar galloped May 19 on the Sha Tin turf. “Romantic Warrior has only raced over 2,400 meters once before when he ran second (to Hong Kong’s then champion stayer, Russian Emperor ). But that time he was quite keen. He’s getting older now, so he’s easier to control and, hopefully, he can handle the distance. He’s amazing. He’s such a talented animal.”

On records and ratings, the race seems Romantic Warrior’s for the taking. But the opposition is just good enough to keep up interest.

Cap Ferrat exits a second-place finish in the Champions Mile (G1) April 26. He surprised most of Hong Kong’s top milers in that race at odds of 37-1, and his reappearance here at half again the distance might seem equally surprising. But, then, Cap Ferrat has specialized in surprises, including a 26-1 victory in the 2025 Hong Kong Derby. He finished third in last year’s Champions & Chater Cup, so the additional distance isn’t an impossible hurdle.

Numbers set the pace in the QE II Cup before fading to finish next-last of eight in his first top-level start. And Ka Ying Generation hasn’t won for a good, long while but has been improving in lower-rated races.

Romantic Thor, a 5-year-old Justify   gelding initially registered under the name Capulet also trained by Danny Shum, Gentlemen Legacy, and Winning Wing return from filling the first three slots in the 2,400-meter Queen Mother Memorial Cup (G3) May 3. This obviously is a tougher spot.

Japanese connections try Romantic Warrior again, even though the local champ saw off the very talented Masquerade Ball with relative ease in the QE II Cup April 26. Neither of the visitors, Deep Monster and Rousham Park , is quite at Masquerade Ball’s level.

Deep Monster makes his first on-track appearance since winning the H. H. The Amir Trophy (G2) in Doha on Valentine’s Day. Previously, he finished 11th in the Japan Cup (G1T), his only top-level effort to date.

Rousham Park  has plenty of grade 1 experience, including a close-call, last-to-second in the 2024 Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1T) behind Rebel’s Romance , but has never won at that level. He has traveled to Hong Kong twice to knock heads with Romantic Warrior in the Hong Kong Cup on International Day, finishing eighth in 2023 and fifth last year.

The foreign participation is crucial to the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s constant effort to maintain the international standing of its group 1 events.
