“It is incredible that Cannes has grown into a city that thrives on the event industry. In fact, the tourism sector contributes 40 percent of its economy. We need to emulate this approach in Jakarta,” Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno said.
According to a press release received here on Sunday, he made the statement after leading a delegation to meet Cannes Deputy Mayor Thomas de Pariente in Cannes on Thursday (May 14).
Rano said the Jakarta administration is interested in establishing cooperation with the Cannes government to expand Jakarta’s international exposure, including through capacity-building programs aimed at adopting the French city’s development approach.
He also expressed hope that Jakarta would eventually produce professionals capable of organizing world-class events similar to those held in Cannes.
“Cannes is remarkable. The city has public universities offering programs up to doctoral degrees that enable graduates to build international networks through global events. Jakarta should be able to reach that level in the future,” he remarked.
Meanwhile, de Pariente highlighted the significant economic contribution generated by the Cannes Film Festival, which is organized by the French Association of the International Film Festival under the leadership of Iris Knobloch.
He noted that the 2026 edition of the festival, scheduled from May 12 to 23, is projected to contribute around 216 million euros to the city’s economy.
“We are proud that the Cannes Film Festival is considered the world’s third-largest event after the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup,” he stated.
In addition to its global reputation in the film industry, Cannes is also known for hosting international events related to television, luxury yachts, music, and other high-value industries.
The city also organizes a five-day annual music festival every June, which typically generates around 160 million euros in economic activity.
