Siemens and CAPHENIA join hands to boost sustainable aviation fuel production

Siemens has partnered with cleantech firm CAPHENIA to expand the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), a cleaner alternative to traditional jet fuel that can significantly cut carbon emissions.

Under the agreement, Siemens will provide automation and digital solutions to support CAPHENIA’s technology, with the aim of developing a standard model for setting up large-scale production plants worldwide, Biomass Magazine reported.

SAF is a synthetic form of kerosene made from renewable sources and can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 80 percent compared to fossil-based aviation fuel.

CAPHENIA’s process uses high-temperature plasma technology to convert bio-methane into synthesis gas, which can then be used to produce SAF, renewable diesel, or other chemical products. The system operates at temperatures of around 1,500 degrees Celsius and combines multiple chemical reactions into a single integrated reactor.

A key feature of the technology is its efficient use of energy. Heat generated during the process is reused to preheat incoming materials, helping achieve an efficiency level of more than 86 percent, which is higher than many conventional methods.
