Scarlets can confirm that Australian lock Max Douglas will be leaving the club at the end of the season to take up a playing opportunity in Japan.

During his two seasons with the Scarlets, the 24-year-old has become a valued member of the squad making 34 appearances since arriving in west Wales in the summer of 2024.

A versatile and powerful athlete who has played in the second and back row, Max made 17 appearances in his debut campaign and a further 17 this season to date. He joined the Scarlets following a successful spell with the Yokohama Canon Eagles in Japan and previously featured for Waratahs in Super Rugby and Manly in Sydney before his move to the Japanese top division.

Max said: “I’ve absolutely loved my time at the Scarlets and I’m very grateful for the opportunity the club has given me over the past two years.  I will look back on my time at Scarlets very fondly – the players, staff and supporters have made me feel part of something special here. They are incredibly passionate about this club and region and proud of its history, and identity which is something I have really enjoyed being a part of.

“From the moment I arrived, everyone made me feel welcome and playing in front of the Scarlets fans at Parc y Scarlets is something I’ll always remember and I’ve made great friendships and memories during my time here with a good group of players.

“While I’m excited for the next chapter, Scarlets will always hold a special place for me and I wish the club every success in the future.”

Scarlets Interim Director of Rugby Nigel Davies said: “Max has made a huge contribution during his time with us, bringing a depth of experience, resilience and character into the squad and leaves with our sincere thanks and best wishes.

“He is a very competitive professional and someone who has given everything for the jersey every time he has taken the field. His athleticism, versatility and work ethic have been a real asset to the squad over the past two seasons.

“Off the field, he has been extremely popular within the group and has embraced everything about representing the Scarlets. We wish Max all the very best for the next stage of his career in Japan.”
