Jakarta. The world’s top badminton players will converge at Jakarta’s Istora Gelora Bung Karno this week as the prestigious Polytron Indonesia Open 2026 gets underway, with 248 athletes from 22 countries competing for a total prize purse of $1.45 million (around Rp 25 billion).

The BWF World Tour Super 1000 tournament, one of the most coveted events on the international badminton calendar, will take place from June 2-7. In addition to offering valuable world ranking points, the tournament is renowned for the electric atmosphere created by Indonesian fans at the iconic Istora Senayan arena.

This year’s edition features an array of elite players, including women’s singles stars An Se-young and Chen Yufei, men’s singles contenders Shi Yuqi, Anders Antonsen, and Kunlavut Vitidsarn, as well as former world champion Ratchanok Intanon.

Indonesia will field many of its leading shuttlers, including Jonatan Christie, Putri Kusuma Wardani, men’s doubles pair Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Leo Rolly Carnando/Daniel Marthin, along with rising young talent Alwi Farhan.

Organizers said the tournament will also introduce several technological innovations aimed at enhancing the spectator experience, as part of efforts to transform Indonesia Open into a more interactive and immersive sportainment event.

“Polytron Indonesia Open 2026 is a shared stage for the entire Indonesian badminton ecosystem,” Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) Chairman M. Fadil Imran said during a press conference in Jakarta on Monday.

Fadil said PBSI’s focus extends beyond chasing results at the tournament, noting that the federation continues to prioritize athlete development and regeneration programs ahead of major international events, including the Asian Games and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

He also expressed appreciation for the support of strategic partners that continue to contribute to the development of badminton in Indonesia.

Meanwhile, PBSI Deputy Chairman and Indonesian badminton legend Taufik Hidayat said mental strength would be a decisive factor for players competing at this year’s Indonesia Open.

“Playing at Istora is not only about technical ability, but also about courage, mental resilience, and readiness to handle pressure in front of home supporters,” Taufik said.

According to Taufik, the gap among the world’s top badminton players has narrowed significantly in recent years, making composure and mental toughness increasingly important in determining match outcomes.

Indonesia Open 2026 Organizing Committee Chairman Achmad Budiharto said online ticket sales have surpassed 76% of the total capacity available for the tournament.

For fans who have yet to secure tickets online, a limited number of tickets will remain available for purchase at the venue during the competition.
