As Guangzhou’s rainy season settles in, the city’s first lotus blossoms of the summer have emerged at Liwan Lake Park (荔湾湖公园).

Located in the historic Xiguan area, the 27.8-hectare park is free to enter and does not require reservations.

The Haishan Xianguan (海山仙馆) section — once a famous private garden built during the Qing Dynasty by wealthy merchant Pan Shicheng, hailed as the “crown of Lingnan gardens,” and known as Puntinqua’s garden in Western historical records — now forms the park’s core lotus-viewing area. Nearly 10,000 square meters of lotus ponds stretch alongside traditional-style pavilions and winding corridors.

The flowers are currently in an early blooming stage. The peak blossoming period is expected from mid-to-late June through July.

For the best photographic results, experts recommend visiting between 7 and 11 am, when the morning light is soft and the lotus flowers are freshest — often still dotted with morning dew.

For visitors planning a route, the suggested itinerary begins at the north gate of Liwan Lake Park, proceeds to Haishan Xianguan, then continues through the park’s many bridges, before exiting via the east gate.

Beyond lotus viewing, guests can also explore the surrounding area, including historic Xiguan houses, the Enning Road arcades, and the Liwan Museum.

Enjoy the seasonal beauty through the lens of China Daily photographer Parker Zheng.
